Wisdom of the Ages and 21st Century Tax Law - Paul Goldberg '91

Wisdom of the Ages and 21st Century Tax Law - Paul Goldberg '91

Getting my Bachelor of Arts degree from Evergreen was not my family's start with "the little college in the woods." My ties with Evergreen started with my remarkable grandmother. The school was in formation in the not so certain years of the early 1970's and there were mixed feelings in Olympia about this new venture. My grandmother, Eva, along with a few other pioneering women invited people into their homes and poured tea at countless gatherings of concerned community leaders and made every effort to build support for this wonderful addition to the cultural life of Olympia. Eventually her son--my father--served on the Board of Governors of the College's Foundation. I am proud to hold one of those positions now as a member of that same Board of Governors.

I loved my experience at the college so much that it's natural for me to make regular contributions not just to the Annual Fund but to special projects and needs that have particular appeal to me. My heart leads me to give, but my head (and my accountant) want to make sure I do my giving in the most effective way. I have contributed stocks in my portfolio that have appreciated in value. By doing this, I can realize the full growth in their value, but do not pay any capital gains tax--thereby extending my gift even further! My charitable tax deduction is not based on the price I paid for the stocks, but on the higher current value.

So whether you are thinking of a direct gift to Evergreen or working with us in creating an estate gift, thank you for joining with me and thousands of others who every year make a commitment to this very special place.

My grandmother is celebrating her 95th birthday this year and she will leave a lasting legacy to the College in the form of her son and grandson's work for our "little college in the woods."
