A Bequest to Support Students Far into the Future - Mary Deraitus '83

A Bequest to Support Students Far into the Future - Mary Deraitus '83

Doing the right thing isn't always easy... like creating your will. When I started writing mine, it made me very uncomfortable. But I knew it was the best way to ensure that the assets I've accumulated over my life will go to the people and institutions I care about. Part of my estate goes to Evergreen to create several permanent scholarships that will carry on my name and the names of people whose lives I want to celebrate.

Sometimes I wonder about the students who will receive these funds through so many generations into the future. I hope they will have the kind of experience I had on campus. It was a time to learn about the world but also about myself. I discovered my own values. I learned how to think in a new way that was creative, independent, and original. I discovered you don't have to be just another cog on the wheel!

I know scholarship funds can help students to take that big step, for both them and those who come after them. I was the youngest of my cousins and the first in my family to seek a four year degree. I broke the mold. And when you're doing that, it's wonderful to have someone make the financial part of your decision a bit easier. It truly does change lives and families.

In the end, creating your will really ends up being rewarding. It's your chance to tell the world what you think is important by making the designations that reflect your most cherished values.
